Haynes, Patterson-White take charge to keep Notts on title track

Leicestershire lose two early wickets before close as Division One battle hots up at the top

Leicestershire 23 for 2 trail Nottinghamshire 451 for 8 dec (Haynes 159, Patterson-White 111*) by 428 runs

With rivals Somerset and Warwickshire breathing down their necks as they chase a second consecutive Rothesay County Championship title, Nottinghamshire finished day two against Leicestershire in a strong position thanks to hundreds by Jack Haynes and all-rounder Liam Patterson-White in a record-breaking partnership.

Haynes made a superb career-best 159 - his third century of the season - and Patterson-White a fine unbeaten 111. The pair shared a stand of 257 for the sixth wicket, eclipsing a record in this fixture that had stood for 101 years.

Nottinghamshire built on their endeavours to claim the maximum five batting bonus points then declared on 451 for eight, claiming two wickets before stumps for good measure as Leicestershire lost both openers to Dillon Pennington, closing on 23 for two.

More than eight hours earlier on an extended day, resuming on 42 without loss from just 63 balls bowled, Nottinghamshire had lost both their openers within the first 40 minutes. Ben Slater fished at one outside off stump to reward Ian Holland's perseverance; six balls later, the promise in Haseeb Hameed's seven boundaries evaporated as he played around a ball from Josh Davey, who would finish with three for 88.

Freddie McCann fell to a swinging delivery from the left-armer Josh Hull that trapped him in front. Joe Clarke, impressive in the last round against Warwickshire, looked to be imposing himself again until, in the last over before lunch, Davey beat his front foot defence to hit off stump.

Continuing his second spell on what was essentially still a first-day pitch, Davey notched a third success in his first over of the afternoon, drawing an edge from Kyle Verreynne to second slip.

But if the day to that point had seen Leicestershire in the ascendancy, the remainder belonged squarely to the home side, who advanced from 143 for five with Verreynne's dismissal to 293 for five at tea before adding another 158 thereafter.

Haynes's first year at Trent Bridge after his departure from Worcestershire in 2023 brought him frustration as he passed fifty seven times without making a hundred. That ended with 142 against Essex in the second match of last season, since which time he has made seven centuries and amassed more than 1,600 first-class runs.

This was his third in 2026, coming off 118 balls with 11 fours and a six. He launched a short ball from legspinner Rehan Ahmed over the legside boundary and reached three figures by pulling Josh Hull, the left-arm seamer, to the rope. He also cut effectively as he and Patterson-White, a wicket-taking left-arm spinner and a regular source of lower middle-order runs, overtook the 201 runs added by Arthur Carr and Willis Walker for the sixth Nottinghamshire wicket when they met their East Midlands rivals at the Aylestone Road ground in Leicester in 1925.

But there was still more to come as the Leicestershire attack struggled to create chances, even after taking the second new ball. Haynes, after celebrating briefly, settled himself to continue, adding six more boundaries, culminating in back-to-back fours off Tom Scriven to reach 150 from 164 deliveries before passing his previous best of 157 against Somerset at Taunton last summer.

Patterson-White, providing flawless support, completed his third first-class hundred with his seventh four, whipped through midwicket off Scriven, three balls before Haynes departed, reaching for one outside off stump and finding Davey at wide third man.

Bowlers Fraser Sheat (15 off 14 balls) and Brett Hutton, who struck four fours and a six in his 26 off 14, then secured the fifth batting point before the declaration in the 98th over, denying Leicestershire a third bowling point and putting their batters in the firing line for 13 overs, which was time enough for Dillon Pennington to have Rishi Patel caught at second slip and bowl Sheridon Gumbs.
