Rohit Sharma's Endgame: Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar, And A World Cup Dream

The Hitman's Finale: Rohit Sharma Rewrites His Ending

Greetings, cricket family. Rohit Sharma, as always, answers the noise with his bat. On the England tour, the Hitman silenced the "outside chatter" with a brilliant 138 off 110 in the final ODI—though India lost that contest, the knock echoed louder than any speculation. At 39, with his Test and T20I chapters now closed, the question has been whether he can chase the 2027 ODI World Cup, that trophy still eluding him.

BCCI Steps In

Following a high-level review meeting in Mumbai Thursday, the BCCI firmly quelled the retirement talk. Joint Secretary Devajit Saikia, addressing reporters after a briefing featuring chief coach Gautam Gambhir, Director of Cricket VVS Laxman, and format leaders Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, was unequivocal:

"He is playing superbly in all the matches. So what more do you want? In the last match, he scored 138 runs. So why is there speculation?"

Saikia pointed to Rohit's Lord's hundred as proof his elite timing, range, and tempo remain intact—and stressed his 50-over spot was never debated.

The Road Ahead

With a demanding calendar looming—Afghanistan series, WI ODI + T20Is, a crucial NZ trip, likely Zimbabwe, then the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia—Saikia noted the focus lies on team preparation, not speculation.

The Delicate SwanSong

Yet managing a legend's twilight is delicate. Gambhir and Agarkar already faced heat over how Rohit and Virat Kohli's Test careers ended. While Yashasvi Jaiswal is a brilliant 50-over option, Rohit remains among the most destructive whiteball openers alive. The tide, for now, clearly favors the Hitman.

One thing is certain: to reach South Africa, Rohit must earn his place through performance—not words.
