Mumbai to make documentary on 2026-27 season, seeks BCCI nod

MCA Eyes First-Ever Domestic Season Documentary — BCCI Nod Pending
The Mumbai Cricket Association has formally approached the BCCI for the green light to shoot a full-length documentary following the Mumbai senior team through the entire 2026-27 domestic campaign. If approved, MCA becomes the first state association in the country to attempt such a project.
MCA execs already met BCCI CEO Hemang Amin to clear the paperwork, and the model is clear: they're eyeing something in the vein of The Test, the Amazon Prime docuseries that followed the Aussies behind the scenes. MCA President Ajinkya Naik confirmed the vision — a look at the real grind behind the most decorated franchise in Indian domestic cricket, with 42 Ranji Trophies on the shelf.
Here's the play: the production will track the team from Day 1 of Ranji prep all the way to the final match, then extend into the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy once the FC season wraps. That's three formats, broad canvas, one story.
Naik put it plainly — "Why not showcase it to the world? Let people see what goes into making a 42-time champion side."
The Business Angle
This isn't an internal archive gathering dust. MCA plans to license the finished product to OTT platforms — positioning it as a commercial venture, not a nostalgia project. Format (multi-ep web series vs. standalone doc) is still TBD.
Timeline's actually clean for producers: Ranji Phase 1 (Oct 11–Nov 5), Phase 2 (Jan 17–Feb 4), knockouts (Feb 9–Mar 3). Defined filming windows across the season.
No production house or streaming partner announced yet. Everything hinges on that BCCI nod before cameras roll.
From an investment lens, this is smart IP play — the Mumbai brand carries weight, and behind-the-scenes cricket content has proven global demand. Worth watching.
