Kusal Mendis ruled out of England T20Is, Charith Asalanka to lead Sri Lanka

SL T20 Squad Shake-up: Mendis & Fernando Out, Asalanka Takes the Armband
Quick one for the community before the England tour kicks off.
Kusal Mendis has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match T20I series vs England — right hamstring injury picked up mid-LPL 2026. Charith Asalanka steps up as captain for all three T20Is. Straight to the point: this is a leadership test for Asalanka, who now carries the batting and tone for the Lankan Lions without their star keeper-bat.
Also absent: leftarm seamer Binura Fernando (back injury, LPL). No recovery timeline disclosed, so treat his availability for the ODI leg as uncertain. Mendis, however, could be in the mix for the ODIs — keep an eye on that.
The Replacements:
- Mendis → Pavan Rathnayake (WK-bat cover)
- Fernando → Dilshan Madushanka (leftarm pace depth)
The Fixtures:
- T20Is: Sep 15 (Southampton), Sep 17 (Cardiff), Sep 19 (Manchester)
- ODIs: Sep 22–27
My read: The back-to-back LPL-then-England schedule is a genuine selection headache. Two regular starters gone right before a demanding bilateral across both formats puts pressure on the panel. The extra leftarm pace from Madushanka is useful for the SW conditions at Southampton, but losing Mendis' bat depth in the middle order is a real concern. If either returns for the ODIs, the X-factor goes way up.
Who's your pick to anchor the bat down the order with Mendis out? 🏏
