Global Cricket Fraternity Reacts On European T20 Premier League's First Week

When Cricket Meets Raga: The ETPL's Opening Movement

Namaste, cricket family. There's a rhythm to every great game—a tempo that builds like the alap of a raga, unhurried at first, then swelling into something that moves the soul. This week, that melody has been playing out across European soil, as the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) completed its opening week and walked into the second movement.

The Stage Is Set

An ICC-sanctioned venture, the ETPL has assembled six city-based franchises—Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam—bringing together international stars and emerging European talent. Like a well-composed ensemble, the established and the emerging play off one another, creating a dynamic the players themselves find intoxicating.

Voices That Give It Soul

What has struck me most, like hearing familiar ragas rendered in fresh arrangements, is the commentary panel. Andy Flower, Shaun Pollock, Lisa Sthalekar, Rohan Gavaskar, Robin Uthappa, Steven Finn—respected names lending their voices. Flower noted something profound: "There is a genuine sense that something new is being built here." Sthalekar echoed it, speaking of a new audience discovering the characters and excitement that make cricket special.

Technology as the Rhythm Section

Behind the beauty sits serious machinery. DRS, player tracking, biomechanics analysis, drone cameras—and NV Play powering live scoring and ball-by-ball data. The craft supports the art.

Legends On the Ground

The atmosphere grew even richer with cricket legends Rahul Dravid, Steve Waugh, Jonty Rhodes, and Matthew Hayden present, lending their pedigree to their respective franchises. And on the pitch, performances from Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell, alongside European names like Bas de Leede and Matthew Humphreys, have reminded everyone: Europe's potential was always there, now coming to life.

As co-founder Dhiraj Malhotra put it, the ETPL isn't just another T20 competition—it's an attempt to build a sustainable cricketing ecosystem across the continent. A long composition, note by note. 🎶
