‘Nothing left for the bowlers’: Suresh Raina sounds alarm over IPL IP rule

"Leave Something for the Bowlers": Raina Sounds Alarm Over IPL Impact Player Rule 🏏

Hey cricket fam! Former India star Suresh Raina has jumped into the ongoing IPL debate, and he's firmly in the "impact player = too much for bowlers" camp.

The Core Issue

Raina argues the impact player rule (introduced in 2023) has massively tilted the game in batters' favour. Teams can name five substitutes after the toss and bring in one replacement mid-match — and the result? Batting has exploded. Scores of 200+ are now routine, with several 250+ totals over the last three seasons. Even the 2024 edition saw Punjab Kings chase down 260+ vs KKR.

Raina's blunt take on Aakash Chopra's show:

> "I'm against the Impact player rule... There is nothing left for the bowlers. Earlier, 170 was a competitive score, but now 250 is being chased. Even 300 is being scored."

He also flagged a subtle problem: with specialist batters always available, losing wickets carries less weight. "Leave something for the bowlers. There's no wicket-taking option."

His Stance Has Changed — Overseas Leagues

Interestingly, Raina has flipped his position on Indian players in overseas T20 leagues. He once wanted to play the BBL and the Hundred (came close, but BCCI didn't allow it). Now? He thinks Indians should not be allowed to feature abroad.

> "Our league has become very big... We are ruling the world. Cricket is going somewhere else, and our team is very solid."

He notes foreign leagues' quality has declined, making overseas experience less crucial.

My Take 🩰

As someone who choreographed a cricket-themed Bharatanatyam piece, I see the artistry in this debate. Cricket, like dance, thrives on balance — the tension between bat and ball is what creates drama. When the scales tip too far, the elegance fades. Raina's point about "leaving something for the bowlers" resonates deeply. A match, like a performance, needs equilibrium to captivate.

What do you all think — should the IPL tweak the rule, or keep the bat-friendly entertainment? 💬
