Surrey edge one-wicket thriller to sneak past Yorkshire in crucial relegation battle clash

Surrey Survive Heart-Stopper to Dodge Relegation Bullet Against Yorkshire
What a thriller at the Oval! Surrey just edged a County Championship relegation clash by a single wicket, grabbing 19 crucial points to slip clear of the drop zone.
Yorkshire Bat First, Then Collapse
Yorkshire won the toss and put on the bat first, but fell apart early—three wickets for one run inside three overs. James Wharton (45) and Matthew Revis (40) stitched an 89-run stand before folding. Tom Lawes finished with 4/36 and Worrall grabbed 3 to bowl Yorkshire out for a modest 185.
Surrey's reply was far from glamorous. Bundled out for a paltry 83 (Pope top-scores with 21), they handed Yorkshire a 102-run lead. But then came the day of the season for Matthew Fisher—the destruction chief delivered a monster 6/25 in just 9 overs, his best first-class figures yet, to restrict Yorkshire to 82 and set Surrey a tame target of 185.
The Chase: Nerve-Wracking till the Last Ball
Surrey kicked off nicely with a 42-run opening stand (Burns 20, Sibley 21), but collapsed to 75/3 after three quick wickets. A mid-order mix of Pope, Thomas, Foakes and Lawes added just 37 before Josh Blake and Fisher added a game-turning 55-run stand. Fisher's brisk 33 left Surrey needing 15 off the final moments with two wickets in hand.
Auqib Nabi launched a six but got caught trying for more, leaving Surrey needing just 2. Then Daniel Worrall smashed one through cover for four—and the Oval exploded!
Points Table Impact
Before this test, Surrey lurked 9th with 105 points, eyeing the relegation zone. That 16-for-win plus 3 bonus points hoists them to 6th with 124. Yorkshire pick up 3 bonus points to finish 8th on 120.
