Dinesh Karthik would be a really good choice for CSK, says Matthew Hayden

CSK Head Coach Search: Hayden Names Karthik as Ideal Successor to Fleming

CSK are on the hunt for a new head coach after Stephen Fleming walked out earlier this year to take the England job—a big move for the five-time IPL champions. Fleming steered the franchise through an 18-year golden era, lifting trophies in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Finding his replacement is now a top priority.

Matthew Hayden—the Aussie opener who wore the CSK jersey 32 times and lifted the 2010 title—has publicly thrown his backing behind Dinesh Karthik. And honestly, the logic checks out. Karthik's been learning under world-class coaches like Andy Flower, so he's got the technical education covered. But Hayden's real selling point is simpler: Karthik's a Tamil boy from Chennai.

Here's the thing CSK know all too well—they're notorious for fishing talent from across the country and the world. "They drive over fish to get to fish," Hayden said on the Wisden podcast. Local flavour could be the missing piece. He also flagged a genuine pain point: running a coaching gig in the IPL as a foreigner is no walk in the park, with language barriers cutting across squads.

Karthik's already in the coaching grind. Since retiring from intl cricket in 2024, he joined RCB as batting coach/mentor for IPL 2025, working alongside Flower. That hands-on experience under a legend is exactly the kind of pedigree that matters.

The timing makes sense too. CSK had a forgettable 2025—finished eighth, missed the playoffs, Dhoni didn't play a single match. Ruturaj Gaikwad's side looked off it all season. Rebuilding mode is on, and nailing the coach position before next season is critical.

My read? Hayden's onto something. A local, coach-trained mind who's absorbed the CSK DNA could be the exact catalyst this franchise needs to bounce back.
