Marnus Labuschagne retained in Australia's Test squad for South Africa tour

Labuschagne Holds On: Why the Numbers Back His Test Retention

Straight to the point — Marnus Labuschagne has kept his No.3 Test spot for the SA tour despite a nightmare run. Three innings vs Bangladesh (1, 31, 4), plus he's already been dropped from the ODI squads for the Zimbabwe and SA whiteball legs. Yet selectors have backed him in the red-ball game. Let me break down why this is actually a rational call, not just loyalty.

The data behind the controversy: Labuschagne has averaged 24.69 across his last 43 Test innings — no century since July 2023. That's a long, below-par stretch and his long-term spot has been fair game. But here's the angle most miss: this is a WTC decider between the top two sides. When the stakes peak, you don't gamble your core bat on hot form. You stick with proven quality.

Squad tells: 16-man squad named today. Alongside the established core, they've brought in Cooper Connolly, Michael Neser and Matthew Kuhnemann. Kuhnemann's inclusion is the tell — he's prep for the Gqeberha Test (2nd), where spin has outpaced pace since COVID. Smart, conditions-based planning. George Bailey openly mentioned "reintegration" as a factor — they're managing player fitness into a tight schedule.

The fixture that matters: Condensed 3-Test series (Oct 9-13 Durban, 18-22 Gqeberha, 27-31 Cape Town) riding straight off 6 ODIs with minimal breaks. Balance and depth were the priorities, per Bailey.

Full squad: P Cummins (c), S Boland, A Carey, C Connolly, C Green, J Hazlewood, T Head, J Inglis, M Kuhnemann, M Labuschagne, N Lyon, M Neser, M Renshaw, S Smith, M Starc, B Webster.

For Labuschagne, this is his window to silence the critics and re-establish value at the top level. My read? He keeps his spot through this series — the selectors aren't throwing quality overboard before the biggest series of the cycle.

What's your call — does he hold firm in Cape Town or do the numbers finally force a change?
