England appoint Kevin Pietersen as specialist white-ball mentor

KP Back in the England Tent as Whiteball Mentor 🏏

Big news this week: Kevin Pietersen has been brought in as a specialist whiteball mentor for England's men's squad, with the Cricket World Cup in South Africa next year firmly on the horizon. He'll slot into Brendon McCullum's setup for the upcoming ODIs and T20Is vs Sri Lanka, then tag along on the winter trips to Australia & South Africa, plus next summer's home series.

KP's not hiding how much this means to him—putting on the England colours again for the first time since 2014 is, in his words, a "profound honour." He's keen to work directly with the squad to squeeze out every bit of potential, calling it a chance to be part of McCullum's "think tank" over the next 12 months.

For those needing a refresher, KP's international career spanned 2004 to 2014—136 ODIs, 37 T20Is, and 104 Tests. It was a wild ride: a short stint as captain in 2008, the infamous Textgate saga in 2012, and that fractious farewell. Since hanging up his boots, he's become a heavyweight pundit, runs his own channel The Switch, and even mentored the Delhi Capitals during the 2025 IPL.

Here's the interesting bit—England's whiteball form is a study in contrasts. They shot to No.1 in the T20I rankings after beating India this summer, yet sit 7th in the ODI pecking order. This winter also marks McCullum's first series in charge since stepping down from the Test role—something KP actually spoke about earlier this year, hinting the Test side just needs a mindset shift and more discipline.

Interesting times ahead for The Three Lions. 🏴
