Karun Nair hits century after South Zone snub; comes up with a strong message on social media

Karun Nair slaps century after being snubbed by South Zone again — and he didn't miss the chance to fire back

Let's talk about a decision that makes zero sense on paper.

Karun Nair, India's most experienced name in the South Zone squad (10 Tests under his belt), has now been left out of the playing XI for two Duleep Trophy 2026 finals running. First the semifinal vs North Zone, now the final vs East Zone at MA Chidambaram. Two straight matches on the sidelines.

Rather than sulk, Nair went and scored a century. For Secretary XI in a KSCA preseason warmup against Chhattisgarh. That's the kind of statement you make when the system doubts you.

His response to the haters? Clean and ruthless. After one social media post called his exclusion "inexplicable," Nair simply replied: "Inexplicable would be an understatement." Mic drop.

So why was he dropped?

Captain Tilak Varma leaned on tactics. South Zone wanted a left-handed bat up the order to counter East Zone's left-arm spinners, so they brought in Kodimela Himateja. Tilak was gracious about it — called Nair "just unlucky" and acknowledged the veteran's domestic record. Fair play to him for being honest about it.

But here's the data problem: Himateja got a duck against North Zone in the semifinal and got dropped for the final. So the tactical gamble didn't even pay off.

The kicker?

East Zone posted a monstrous 708 in their first innings at Chepauk — a total that would test any middle order. And South Zone chose to bench their most in-form, most experienced batter while doing it.

East Zone reached this final by beating defending champions Central Zone by four wickets, so this wasn't a weak opposition.

The numbers don't lie: experienced bat, scoring heavily in domestic cricket, snubbed twice, replacement flopped. The cricketing world is now asking what South Zone's selection committee was thinking.
