Big Bash League to Begin Partial Privatisation With Melbourne Renegades Sale

BBL Kicks Off Partial Privatisation With Renegades Sale

Cricket Australia confirmed Tuesday that the Big Bash League is moving toward partial privatisation, with the struggling Melbourne Renegades leading the charge. The goal is bringing in private investment to protect the T20 competition's financial future, as overseas leagues continue to lure talent with bigger deals.

Chair Mike Baird called it a "defining moment" for the game, noting the months of analysis and consultation behind the decision. The target? New Renegades ownership in place for the 2027-28 season. Other franchises could follow later down the track.

The road hasn't been smooth. An earlier proposal to sell stakes in all eight BBL teams stalled amid fears of losing local control. While Victoria, WA and Tasmania backed the move (with SA open to it), NSW and Queensland firmly rejected privatisation—so this partial approach is the compromise.

Interesting times ahead for the BBL. How do y'all feel about private owners coming into the league?
