'This Can Unlock New Areas And Benefits': Cummins, Molinuex Back BBL Privatisation Plan

Cummins & Molinex Back BBL Privatisation as CA Kicks Out Renegades Sale

Cricket Australia confirmed Tuesday that the bidding process has officially begun to sell a 100% stake in the Melbourne Renegades to private investors, with the club set to compete under new ownership from the 2027/28 BBL/WBBL season. Both Australian captains—Pat Cummins and Sophie Molineux—have publicly backed the move.

Molineux, who currently leads the Renegades in the WBBL, sees big potential. She says new investors could bring innovation, growth, and fresh fans—especially beyond the 2026/27 campaign. "The WBBL is still the best women's competition in the world on quality," she noted, "but privatisation could make the product even better." She's also excited about rebranding possibilities and expanding the fanbase.

Cummins echoed the sentiment, stressing it needs to be "done well." He highlighted benefits for the BBL and how the setup could strengthen the future of Australian cricket, including Test cricket, which he holds close.

The sale won't disrupt the upcoming WBBL or BBL seasons—the Renegades will run in caretaker mode under CA for now.

Reports suggest the Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Stars, and Perth Scorchers are keen on private investment, while Cricket NSW's Sixers and Thunder, plus the Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers, are holding off for now. As Cummins put it, full buy-in is hard to achieve, but "each club's decision is in their own hands."

If done right, this could be a real game-changer for the BBL.
