Mark Butcher: Ashes ticket prices are expensive, but it comes down to capacity and demand

Ashes Prices Hitting Hard, But Butcher Points to the Real Culprit: Demand

Right, let's talk numbers—because the 2027 Ashes ticket prices just landed and they've got everyone grumbling. The ECB have pulled the covers off pricing for next year's series, and it's not pretty. Edgbaston's Test? A whopping 43% jump, with the cheapest non-member ticket sitting at £115 before you even factor in the booking fee. Lord's category A? A cool £195.

Now, ex-England bat Mark Butcher isn't exactly defending the markup. But he's calling out what I think is the actual story here: it's plain old supply and demand.

The Small Grounds Problem

Here's the thing most folks forget—we simply don't have big stadiums in this country. Even Lord's, the biggest fish in the UK pond, only holds 31,180. Butcher's point is sharp: when you've got limited seats and massive demand, you price at the peak where the ground still sells out. You're extracting maximum value from a crowd that's desperate to get in.

His Lord's illustration is spot on. "If Lord's had a capacity of 100,000, some tickets would go for 40 quid and some for 350 quid. But it doesn't—that's just the reality of our scale."

The Irony Nobody's Mentioning

And here's the kicker that makes you chuckle: England are currently 20 up against Pakistan in their ongoing Test tri-series, yet the third Test at Edgbaston this week hasn't sold out—even with tickets a far more friendly £57.50 to £87.50. Butcher nails it: "You make things cheaper when you're desperate to sell, pricier when you've got no problem shifting them."

So the Ashes, with its global pull and London's 8-9 million-strong catchment plus international tourists wanting to check off "I've been to a Lord's Test," commands premium prices. Simple economics. Big stadiums = accessible pricing. Small grounds = dear tickets.

The ECB's dream of cricket being the "most inclusive sport" is a tad at odds with reality—but Butcher's right that this is economy of scale, not malice.
