County lose captain for the rest of the season after shambolic administrative error

Du Plooy Out for the Season — Middlesex's Own Admin Blunder Costs Them Before List A Final
What a bizarre situation for Middlesex. Club captain Leus du Plooy is now out for the rest of the 2026 season — and ironically, it's not a injury that's done this. It's a shambolic administrative error by the club itself.
Here's the mess. du Plooy, the middleorder bat, declared on Sat Sept 5 that he wanted to explore playing international cricket for South Africa. Fair enough — he's South African by birth, qualifies as a local for Middlesex via his Hungarian passport, and has floated England ambitions before. But under ECB rules, that declaration instantly flips a player's status to overseas for domestic purposes.
The problem? Middlesex had a vacant overseas spot, but they only realised du Plooy's status had changed after the overseas registration deadline — which passed on Sun Sept 6. Too late. So now, despite leaving a year early on his contract, he simply can't be registered to play again this term.
The fallout is real: he'll miss the remaining County Championship game plus the One Day Cup final later this month — Middlesex's first List A final since 1990. That's a massive blow.
Max Holden has stepped up as interim captain for today's Championship fixture vs Durham. The club says they're still in talks with the ECB and PCA, but until that resolves, du Plooy's season is done.
Talk about a case of self-inflicted wounds. 🏏
