Bollywood Movie Shooting Blamed For Pitch Trouble At English County

Pitch Controversy Casts Shadow Over Leicestershire's Relegation Fight

Namaste, cricket lovers. Let me share a curious tale from the County Championship—one where the drama spills beyond the boundary rope.

Leicestershire are locked in a battle to dodge relegation from Division One of the County Championship, yet their fate may now hinge on an unexpected matter: the very pitch they defend at Grace Road. The club has been charged with breaching the ECB's pitch regulations following their home fixture against Glamorgan last month.

According to reports, match referee Ian Ramage summoned Andy Mackay, the ECB's pitch and grounds advisor, to inspect the surface after the side clinched a low-scoring victory. The pitch bore an unusual look—grass covering the mid-pitch while both ends were cut shorter, yielding variable bounce. That said, all four innings stretched past 50 overs, and two batters, Sheridon Gumbs and Kiran Carlson, both neared a century with scores in the 90s.

Here's where the story takes an artistic turn. Alfonso Thomas, Leicestershire's head coach, offered a fascinating theory: a Bollywood production team filming a biopic at Grace Road in the run-up to the match may have altered the pitch's moisture levels. Thomas, ever the philosopher of the game, noted that patient batters who applied themselves rather than merely waiting for the ball could still make runs—two guys batted for nearly 200 balls. As for safety concerns, he pointed out plainly that no player was taken to hospital.

Leicestershire have "strongly disputed the allegations," referring the matter to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel. With proceedings ongoing, the club has politely declined further comment until the hearing's outcome is known.

A delightful reminder that cricket's rhythm is woven into the very fabric of its grounds—sometimes even shaped by the silver screen.
