'It's very special for us' – South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt looking forward to historic T20I series vs Zimbabwe

SA Women Set For Historic T20I Run Against Zimbabwe — Wolvaardt Fired Up
South Africa women are heading to Bulawayo for a landmark 5-match T20I series vs Zimbabwe, running Sept 11–19 with all games at the Queens Sports Club (the 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th and 19th). First time these two African neighbours have ever met at senior international level — properly historic.
Skipper Laura Wolvaardt is buzzing about it, calling it a genuinely special moment for the side.
> "It's very special for us... we haven't played against another African team for as long as I've played. Pretty cool to face our neighbours. Very excited to head over there."
The catch? It's a squad in transition. A big chunk of the experienced core is missing — Kapp, van Niekerk, Luus, Mlaba, Brits, Tryon, de Klerk, Khaka and Ismail all unavailable. Three uncapped youngsters have been drafted in, and Wolvaardt's clearly keen to watch them loose off.
> "Awesome to see those youngsters express themselves, play free cricket against a new opposition. Lots of talent in the nets. Keen to see how they go."
For the new gen, this is a rare senior-level exposure game. For Wolvaardt — one of the few seasoned heads left — it's a chance to steer the next wave while the fixtures roll out over nine days.
Bottom line: unproven squad, historic occasion, and a captain who couldn't be more excited. Worth keeping an eye on how these emerging names handle the big moment.
