Michael Vaughan calls Kevin Pietersen ‘an absolute diamond’ after England return

Vaughan: Pietersen "an absolute diamond" as England whiteball mentor returns

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has thrown his weight behind Kevin Pietersen's surprise appointment as the whiteball batting mentor, calling his former teammate "an absolute diamond" and crediting his relentless work ethic.

Pietersen is back in the England setup after a 12-year absence, joining McCullum's coaching staff as a specialist mentor for the whiteball teams. His brief? Helping the side build toward the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

Speaking on _The Overlap's Stick to Cricket_ podcast, Vaughan pulled no punches on Pietersen's intensity:

> "There was no one who worked harder in my time as an England cricketer than Kevin. He'll definitely bring that drive to the team."

The twist? Pietersen has spent years publicly slamming England's prep and training standards—calling out the whiteball camp in India back in 2025 and the Ashes buildup. Vaughan thinks the ECB actually deserve credit for hiring someone who's "had a pop" at them recently:

> "They're willing to appoint someone who's had a pop at them not too long ago, which I like."

But Vaughan wasn't all praise—he flagged a real concern about the new-look setup. With both McCullum and Pietersen being massive personalities, he worries management could end up more in the spotlight than the players themselves.

> "McCullum is a big front... and you've got Pietersen, one of the biggest names in world cricket. They are huge."

His warning is straightforward: lose one or two games, and the fingers will point at the "high-profile" coaching element. He's calling it possibly the most high-profile coaching team in the world—and says England will need a strong supporting cast to back up those big names.
