Under investigation England quick takes first County Championship five-for in five years

Carse's County Five-for: A Silver Lining Amid the Storm

Durham's Brydon Carse finally picked up his first County Championship five-for since April 2021, and honestly, the timing says everything about this cricketer's current chapter.

The figures that mattered

Against Middlesex, Carse went 5/22 off 19 overs — a number that, on any other day, would headline the sports pages. On the opening evening, he struck hard, removing both Middlesex openers inside the first 10 overs, both caught at third slip by Colin Ackerman. Durham were bowled out for 252, but Carse had set the tone.

The next morning, the wickets tumbled for Middlesex's first innings (441), though that was mostly Ben Raine's handiwork. With Middlesex seven down and his five-for looking unlikely, Carse dug deep — pinned Sebastian Morgan lbw, then got Tom Helm caught behind and trapped Naavya Sharma lbw in the same over. Middlesex all out for 203.

But this isn't a simple celebration

Let's not pretend this milestone arrives in a vacuum. Carse has had a rollercoaster. England's leading wicket-taker in last winter's Ashes, only to be bundled off the pace attack amid heavy criticism, then injured ahead of the IPL and missing the start of the domestic season. He sat out the New Zealand Tests, only returning to the Hundred and County Championship last month.

Then came the off-field chaos — filmed being handcuffed by police after celebrating Durham's win over Derby. The Cricket Regulator launched an investigation. He was dropped from the second Test squad, then left out of the third Test and the whiteball squads against Sri Lanka.

So this five-for isn't just a stat — it's a quiet statement of resilience from a talented bwl trying to claw his way back into England's good graces.

The bottom line

Great spell, genuine talent, turbulent times. Carse's shown he still has the ability. The question hanging over all of it: will he be fit to back it up when England next call?

What do you lot think — does a five-for in the County Championship deserve a second chance at international level?
