Duleep Trophy 2026 Final Live Score, East Zone vs South Zone Day 5: East Zone Eye Emphatic Win Over South Zone

Notes from the pavilion — a match that unfolded like a well-composed raga, building through its movements toward a quiet crescendo.

The fifth day of the Duleep Trophy 2026 final at Chennai sets the stage for what promises to be an emphatic East Zone conclusion. Walking in at 212/5 with an overwhelming 584-run lead, East Zone have essentially composed the final movement of this contest. Kumar Kushagra (34*) and Md Kounain Quraishi (26*) stand unbeaten, having shared an unbroken 52-run sixth-wicket partnership as the day's light fades.

The context that gives this its depth

There is a rhythm to how this match has developed, and Day 4 marked its turning point. On the redball stage, both Ishan Kishan (99) and South Zone skipper Tilak Varma (80) demonstrated their credentials with near-milles. Yet Kishan's knock carried a greater resonance — it placed East Zone firmly on course for victory, much like an alap that establishes the mood before the true melody arrives.

Tilak's patient 211-ball innings lifted South Zone to 336 all out in their first innings, but they found themselves trailing East Zone's monumental 708 by 372 runs. It is this gulf that has given East Zone their commanding position, their lead now stretching to 584 in the second innings.

What the final day may hold

With East Zone batting comfortably and South Zone facing the long shadows of an evening, the narrative points toward a comprehensive victory for the East. The question that lingers, as it does in any performance, is whether South Zone can find a final act of resistance — or whether this contest will resolve into the serene certainty its structure already suggests.

The tanpura's drone continues. East Zone simply need to see out the remaining overs.
