Ex-India Coach Reveals What Inspired Rohit Sharma To Build Four-Pack Abs: "Circle Drawn Around His Belly"

Ek taan of transformation — the story behind Rohit Sharma's famous four-pack.

Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar recently opened up on The Great Indian Cricket Show (Doordarshan) about that pivotal moment when Rohit Sharma's omission from the 2011 ODI World Cup squad became the seed of a physical revolution.

Nayar recalled the early days when the two argued constantly. He trained hard in the gym; Rohit leaned purely on raw skill. "I'd say, 'Come on, let's hit the gym,' and he'd reply, 'Leave it, I will score runs,'" Nayar shared. That mindset was of its time — the Virat Kohli fitness phenomenon had yet to reshape Indian cricket's culture. In fact, even Kohli was, by Nayar's account, "a slightly chubby youngster" back then.

The turning point arrived in a rather unlikely form. A news channel published a photo of Rohit with a circle drawn around his belly — an image that, as Nayar put it, "stuck in his mind."

The heartbreak of missing the World Cup squad only deepened the resolve. With the IPL just six weeks away, Rohit made a promise to his coach: "Nayar, whatever it takes in these six weeks, I need to enter the IPL with at least a four-pack." And true to his word — he did.

For Nayar, the lesson is clear. "For him, skill was never the issue. It was always about fitness and using that to elevate his skill set."

A reminder that sometimes the deepest growth comes wrapped in rejection — a raga composed from silence, played back as strength.
