Women's Asia Cup: Prez Murmu Lauds Indian Team, Calls Them Source Of Great Inspiration For Youth

India Crowned Women's T20 Asia Cup Champions for 8th Time
Team India have clinched the Women's T20 Asia Cup 2026, beating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final on Sunday. This marks India's record-extending 8th Asia Cup title, avenging their 2024 final defeat to the same opposition.
The Final
India posted a commanding 183/5. Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana put on a tournament-record 129-run stand for the opening wicket, both scoring half-centuries. Shafali's 68 off 39 balls included the fastest fifty in Asia Cup history, reaching the mark off just 24 deliveries. Mandhana complemented with a composed 59 off 39 balls, though Sri Lanka fought back late to keep it interesting.
India's bowlers then wrapped it up, with Shree Charani taking 4 wickets and Deepti Sharma adding 2. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 111, with Chamari Athapaththu top-scoring on 36.
Institutional Recognition
President Droupadi Murmu lauded the side on X, calling the players a "great inspiration" for India's youth, especially daughters, and noting they've "done the country proud." She highlighted their dominant tournament, as they won every match.
A well-rounded team performance across bat and ball sealed India's sixth Asia Cup final win over Sri Lanka and an eighth title overall.
