1st T20I: Afghanistan Erred In Execution And Made Fundamental Errors, Says Head Coach Pybus

Afghanistan Missed the Mark: Pybus Owns Up on Execution Blunders vs India
Afghanistan opened their T20I series against India with a routine 7-wk loss at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, and head coach Richard Pybus didn't waste time looking for excuses. India chased down 157 comfortably, powered by Abhishek Sharma's blistering 82, and Pybus was candid that poor preparation and sloppy execution cost his side.
A Team Running Cold
Afghanistan's last T20I was Feb 19, and it showed. Their body language looked passive, almost resigned, especially once Abhishek tore into the attack. Pybus laid it out plainly:
"You don't have any excuses. A lot of players came off domestic games—that's far from ideal prep. The volume of games matters absolutely. We lacked execution and made fundamental mistakes."
The rain didn't help either. Grounds underwater for two days at the Yamuna Complex meant little real on-field work. But Pybus insisted his group would adapt over the series.
Bumrah & Co Too Hot to Handle
India's attack was simply unplayable. Bumrah, Chakravarthy, Arshdeep and Axar all fired. Afghanistan lost four wkt for just four runs, falling apart inside the first seven overs. Pybus: "We didn't adapt. We couldn't read the conditions or build partnerships."
Omarzai's Lone Fireworks
The one bright spot was Azmatullah Omarzai, whose unbeaten 64 off 44 balls lifted Afghanistan to 156/8. That knock is the second-highest by a No.6 batter or lower vs India in T20I history—behind only Dasun Shanaka's 74*. It also equals Ibrahim Zadran's own 64 in Dubai as the highest Afghan individual score vs India in the shortest format.
Pybus praised him as "a very special talent... good under pressure, someone who turns up. A real asset."
Managing the Pacer Problem
With Naveen ul Haq still not match-fit after a long injury, Pybus admitted working with the seamers is ongoing: "It's about getting to know the bowlers. I need time to work with them—over the next six months we'll see how they respond."
Looking Ahead
Afghanistan sit No.10 in the rankings, playing the No.1 side—Pybus acknowledged the gap but backed new T20I skipper Ibrahim Zadran to bounce back. With just a 24-hr turnaround before Tue's 2nd game, he stressed clarity of mind and getting fundamentals right.
"We're much, much better than what we showed here. There's plenty of work to be done."
