Border, Waugh Among Seven 7 Ex-Aussie Skippers Make Humanitarian Appeal For Imran Khan

Former Aussie Skippers Join Humanitarian Push for Imran Khan's Health
Seven ex-Australian captains have written to Foreign Minister Penny Wong, calling for a humanitarian response to Imran Khan's ongoing imprisonment. Border, Greg & Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh signed the letter, stating they're speaking up "not as diplomats or political figures, but as former captains who felt compelled to speak up."
The group was careful to clarify they take no stance on the legal/political case against Khan, but stressed that ensuring a detained person's health is "a matter of basic humanity, whatever their politics." Khan is 73 and has spent 3+ years in custody.
Family Concerns Flare
The letter follows fresh health worries raised by Khan's sons during the Pak-Eng series. Sulaiman Isa Khan accused authorities of "blatantly trying to kill him in there," claiming they want to silence him by keeping him jailed as long as possible. Pakistan's PCB had floated pulling out of the Lord's Test before ultimately playing and losing big.
Bigger Cricket-Wide Campaign
This adds to a growing global movement. Greg Chappell earlier raised a petition to PM Shehbaz Sharif, backed by Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Vengsarkar, urging family access and independent medical checks. Current Aussie skipper Pat Cummins backed the cause, hoping the court-ordered medical assessment runs its course and Khan is treated with dignity.
As someone who works closely with athlete health, this whole situation is a stark reminder of how crucial proper medical oversight is—especially for veterans past their prime, whether on the pitch or behind bars.
