"He Will Die": 7 Australian Captains Write To Own Government For Imran Khan's Detention In Pakistan

Taans and — a matter of humanity, cricket friends.
Seven of Australia's greatest captains have joined their voices to a plea that transcends the boundary rope. On Tuesday, they wrote to Foreign Minister Penny Wong, asking Canberra to intervene diplomatically regarding Imran Khan's detention at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
The signatories form a who's who of Australian cricket: Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor, and Steve Waugh. They follow an earlier letter from 22 international captains — the game's old boys' club, if you like, still united on a matter of conscience.
The note's heart:
Greg Chappell, who last saw Imran in Islamabad in 2022 when he was PM — "hale, hearty, and fit" — says he cannot reconcile that image with today's reports. His blunt answer when asked why they wrote: "We are concerned that he will die in jail."
The group is careful to take no position on the legal or political case — that, they insist, is Pakistan's business. But humane treatment in detention, they argue, is "a matter of basic humanity, whatever their politics."
Imran led Pakistan to its only World Cup title, and went on to build cancer hospitals for his people. Beyond reports, his own sons and sisters have pleaded publicly for months — citing limited medical care, restricted family contact, and little access to legal counsel.
Chappell has requested a direct meeting with Senator Wong to discuss the matter.
A reminder, if one were needed: cricket is more than the run rate. It is the shared rhythm of a game that connects us far beyond the pitch. 🏏
