8-76: County seamer with average of 67 doubles first-class wicket tally to stun Championship title contenders

Cliff's 876 Stuns Championship Leaders Somerset
Yorkshire seamer Ben Cliff produced a match-winning spell, tearing through Somerset's batting order with 876 in 13.4 overs to stun Division One leaders at Headingley.
The numbers tell the story. Cliff walked onto the field carrying just 7 wickets across 10 FC matches at a healthy 67.42 average. By stumps on day one, that tally had more than doubled to 15, courtesy of eye-catching figures that had the title contenders reeling.
Day One – Yorkshire Bat First
Captain Jonny Bairstow laid a foundation with 79, his first fifty since the Championship resumed. But Somerset's Lewis Gregory, Migael Pretorius and Jake Ball each grabbed 3 wickets to hold Yorkshire to 212.
The reply fell apart fast. Both Somerset openers were back in the hut inside 6 overs, with Ben Coad and Cliff taking one each. Then Cliff struck gold, removing Archie Vaughan and Tom Abell on consecutive deliveries to reduce the visitors to a shaky position. Matthew Revis added Henry Nicholls's wicket as Somerset finished the day.
Day Two – The Collapse
Cliff struck again early on day two, removing James Rew and Lewis Gregory back-to-back, before Jack Leach was caught behind to leave the leaders at 868 in trouble.
But Craig Overton and Pretorius staged a fighting rearguard, adding 90 for the ninth wicket and both reaching their fifties. Cliff finished strong with an 8-wicket haul, though the pair dragged Somerset past 200 and left Yorkshire only 9 runs short of their first-innings total.
Why It Matters
Somerset entered this round sitting top of Division One on 189 points from 12 matches, with Nottinghamshire (185) and Warwickshire (184) breathing down their necks. A result like this? That's exactly the kind of performance that separates title contenders from the rest.
Big shoutout to Cliff for turning a modest FC record into a match-defining performance. 🏏
