Crane century lifts Glamorgan as Surrey are set massive target

Pope, Patel make strong start to chase with safety assured for another season

Surrey 115 and 177 for 2 (Patel 82*, Pope 58*) need a further 434 runs to beat Glamorgan 132 and 594 (Tribe 155, Crane 114*, van der Gugten 72)

Mason Crane's career-best 114 not out all-but ensured Glamorgan's Division One safety on day three of their Rothesay County Championship encounter with hosts Surrey at the Kia Oval.

Crane, who scored his maiden first-class century and a 99 earlier this season, continued his morph to all-rounder status with three sixes and 12 fours in his almost three-hour stay. He shared stands of 129 with Tim Van der Gugten (72) - a record for Glamorgan's eighth wicket against Surrey - and 98 with last man Mir Hamsa (35).

Adam Thomas who took 2 for 74, also equaled the Surrey record of eight outfield catches in a match set first by the legendary Tony Lock in 1957 and later matched by Ollie Pope in 2024.

Needing a record 612 to win, Surrey raced to 177 for 2 by the close, thanks to 82 not out for Ryan Patel and an unbeaten 58 from Pope, the pair sharing a thrilling stand of 132 for the third wicket.

Leicestershire's points deduction announced 24 hours earlier took much of the jeopardy out of this contest with Surrey now safe and Glamorgan, 356 ahead only needing a draw to ensure a second successive season in the top division in 2027.

Not unexpectedly then, the morning session meandered along as the visitors sought to remove any sniff of a home win. Nevertheless, Auqib Nabi removed Chris Cooke caught at midwicket before nailing Wednesday's centurion Asa Tribe lbw for 155. Crane and Van der Gugten though ground out a further 49 by lunch.

The afternoon's fayre was in sharp contrast as both batters launched a cascade of boundaries. Van der Gugten drove one straight down the ground before an eighth four, fumbled on the boundary edge took him to 50.

Crane too was strong on the pull shot, helping to raise the hundred partnership and it wasn't long before the record books were rewritten, the pair surpassing Glamorgan's previous best 8th wicket partnership set by Hamish Anthony and Neil Kendrick at the Oval in 1995.

Leg-spinner Crane raised his own 50 with a six to midwicket, and Van der Gugten was within sight of his career-best when run out by Pope's direct hit.

On 52 at the time, Crane, went into overdrive with just last man Hamsa for company. Initially turning down singles, he drilled Thomas through midwicket and cover off successive balls before clearing his front leg to send one from James Taylor over wide mid-on for six.

There were no nervous 90s as Dan Lawrence was driven to point, edged to third and then clubbed over the ropes.

Hamsa then ditched caution to join in the revelry. Dropped twice, once comically, he launched three huge maximums before his luck ran out when he topped edged one back to bowler Thomas, whose catch earnt him his place in the record books.

Surrey soon lost skipper Rory Burns to a sharp catch above his head at third slip by Kiran Carlson and the successful bowler Toole then struck Dominic Sibley on the thigh pad, the ball deflecting onto the stumps without disturbing the bails. Toole though had the last word trapping the former England man in front.

Ryan Patel was almost a third victim of Toole, Carlson getting a hand to a flashing edge at third slip but unable to cling on. Scare survived Patel hit the same bowler for six and unleashed a succession of drives to race to 50 at faster than a run a ball.

Pope caught the mood, twice clearing the ropes as he too made a rapid 50 in the evening sunshine, leaving Surrey with hopes of salvaging a draw on the final day.
