Campbell, Hope, Jangoo centuries take West Indies to 405

Pindrop silence. One of the more satisfying feelings for a visiting team in India. West Indies stunned a full house in Guwahati into a morgue-like silence as they raced away to their first 400 in ODI cricket. Only once has a side ever lost after scoring 400, setting India needing 44 more than they have ever scored batting second.

Only for the sixth time in ODI history, three batters scored hundreds in an innings: John Campbell registering the fifth-quickest for West Indies in 65 balls, Shai Hope going past Brian Lara to 20 centuries, and Amir Jangoo not much slower than Campbell in his 114 off 77 balls.

In the absence of the centurion from the previous match, the injured Justin Greaves, Campbell stunned India in the early goings, scoring West Indies' joint-fastest fifty against India in 29 balls and ending the powerplay on 69 off 39. Hope, who himself loves the new ball but has moved himself down for the larger good of the team, showed his pedigree in making sure there was no repeat of the collapse in Trivandrum. Jangoo was arguably the most impressive of the three, starting his innings in the middle overs and denying bowlers any respite.

There was no blockbuster finish with Hope and Jangoo falling in the 41st and 43rd overs, but Roston Chase made sure West Indies still scored 76 in the last 10 overs. That finish was small consolation for India, who were two options short as Prasidh Krishna went off the field after bowling only five overs and Naman Dhir injured himself in his seventh.

The last 10 overs featured a good comeback for debutant Auqib Nabi, who went for 61 in his first 5.5 overs but ended up with figures of 0 for 84. Kuldeep Yadav took the wickets of Hope and Keemo Paul to play a part in it as he became the second-quickest Indian to 200 wickets.

Still keeping Mohammed Siraj on the bench, India still strengthened their bowling with Nabi in for Nitish Kumar Reddy. On 23 off 22 in five overs, Campbell suddenly went into top gear, hitting Krishna out of the attack with 22 in the seventh over. Forced to use spin early, India found no joy as Campbell slog-swept Jadeja for a six and then hit the otherwise economical Kuldeep over extra cover for another of his five sixes. It would appear he was hitting so hard he gave himself cramps in the first hour of the match and he was done by the time the 19th over started, having scored 101 out of West Indies' 147 runs at that point.

Having enjoyed that cushion to play himself in, Hope extended the same courtesy to Jangoo, capitalising on two lives - one difficult return catch by Kuldeep and a sharp one missed at short midwicket by Virat Kohli - and hitting Gurnoor Brar off his hard lengths with a four and a six in the 21st over.

Not that Jangoo, who scored a half-century in the first ODI, needed long to settle in. He timed and placed the ball beautifully, often using the pace provided by the bowlers to keep matching Hope shot for shot. Krishna came back for one over, the 31st which is when he took a wicket last match, got hit for a six by Hope and went off the field. Brar tried to replicate Krishna's work but kept travelling.

Jadeja might have gone on to take two wickets after a barren run of just one in his last eight matches, but his first eight overs read 8-0-62-0 and presented Shubman Gill a problem of lack of jeopardy in the middle overs.

Jangoo's acceleration in overs 30 to 40 was something to behold. There was not one brutal hit. He almost caressed his way to 49 off 25 balls in this period. Hope could now just pick singles in his 90s as he became the second-most prolific centurion for West Indies.

A golden duck for Sherfane Rutherford as part of three wickets in three overs slowed West Indies down but not enough to deny them a record score.
